The author writes:

I just realised that one seemingly trivial bit of information that ended up on the cutting room floor in a previous arc was important for a future arc. But now the natural place to reveal that information has passed.

So, it's best to introduce the information as soon as possible so that hopefully it'll just be considered background information by the time it's suddenly needed.

That's why today's comic includes a one panel flashback that has nothing whatsoever to do with the five panels surrounding it.
