Despite the contention of some that Jon is just really good at reading Garfield's body language, a number of strips make it clear that Jon is hearing Garfield's thoughts a lot of the time. By contrast, Garfield almost never speaks, be it English or cat. Oddly, Odie's thoughts are almost never reported, but he is capable of it.
