Lucy: You and that dumb blanket! You'll be dragging that thing around for the rest of your life!
Linus: Well, what's it to you? Maybe I won't drag it around for the rest of my life...
{Beat panel, Linus crossly sucks his thumb}
Linus: Maybe I'll have it made into a sport coat!
Charlie Brown: Still got your blanket, eh, Linus?
Charlie Brown: What are you going to do when you get too old to drag it around?
Linus: Who knows?
Linus: I've been thinking seriously of having it made over into a sport coat!
Linus: You stupid beagle, I know you're in there!
Linus: Come out, and bring that blanket with you! Do you here {sic} me? Come out!!
{Snoopy exits his doghouse, proudly wearing a coat; Linus is shocked}
Linus: My blanket! You had it made into a sport coat!!
Snoopy: I prefer to think of it as one of the new double-knits...

The author writes:

Linus appears to have come up with the idea on a whim during an argument with his sister. Nearly three months later, it is revealed that he is now giving the idea some serious consideration. If we consider that Linus is approximately 6 or 7 in 1958, and we assume that time passes normally from then on, in 1971, Linus would be 19 or 20 - an age which, I'm sure we would all agree, is too old to be dragging around a security blanket.

Snoopy knows that Linus is bound by comic-strip aging, and will remain perpetually 6. Therefore, to himself, he will never be "too old." So Snoopy, who's always been a little bit outside of the fourth wall, takes the initiative and makes his blanket into a coat for him. It's all part of being man's best friend.

Original Peanuts strips: 1958-06-23, 1958-09-17, 1971-11-09.
