Strip by: Manyhills
Garfield: Tell me, Arlene, what good is that space between your teeth?
Arlene: I read somewhere in a folklore book that gap-teethed women are supposed to be sexier
Arlene: In medieval interpretation, gap teeth meant that a woman was very fond of travelling
Arlene: Many people from overseas or who have been overseas would say that it's a lucky symbol or a beauty symbol
Arlene: The Egyptians thought that women with spaces in their teeth, the moon would shine through the space in their teeth and make them sing like beautiful birds
{Garfield turns to leave}
Arlene: When will I see you again?
Garfield: Next time I want a history lesson
The author writes:
Arlene's dialogue mostly taken from the 1987 Les Blank documentary short Gap-Toothed Women. While mostly a series of straight-to-camera interviews with women possessing the titular dental lacuna, the film briefly features a Garfield strip: the 1984-10-24 comic is shown in a one-shot-per-panel sequence.
Original strip: 1980-12-20.
