The author writes:

The recent* two weeks of Garfield strips have been a bit dark by basic standards and have focused a lot on the meaninglessness of Jon and Garfield's existence. Instead of a mushy Liz-based joke with Garfield reacting as an 8-year-old would, I wanted to allow the reader to make an assumption as to what is going on in Jon's mind in this particular situation and wanted to portray a sense of dread and defeat in Garfield, who is ashamed by not knowing what Jon means. Garfield is often better when reappropriated to existential crisis.
