The author writes:

When you experiment with Garfield strips over a period of time, you find that some of the remixes and rearranged panels seem more humorous than future strips. I cut up the dialogue written in 2003-05-13, and got this strip; this was a rearrangement and wasn't in the original comic. And a year later, Garfield was still unfunny. We had no explanation for this at the time, it's just suggesting when you run a comic strip for 24 years, the humor leaks out. But we simply accepted it and continued the experiments. The next step was remixes of other comics...
