{Jon puts a leash on Garfield}
Jon: There you are, Garfield. A genuine Naugahyde leash.
Garfield: How inhumane! How cruel!
Garfield: Do you know how many Naugas had to shed to make this leash?

The author writes:

Naugas were an actual thing, used to promote Naugahyde in the 60s and 70s. They can shed their skin, making the use of their hides possible without slaughter. Garfield (or perhaps Jim Davis) clearly didn't know this.
