Charlie Brown: Come back!
Lucy: Mine!
Lucy: I got it! I got it!
{Lucy abruptly turns away from the baseball, which lands on the ground, to address empty space in the opposite direction.}
Lucy: Heroine!
SFX: Bonk!
Lucy: Heroine! Heroine is feminine!
Lucy: A hero is a male, and a heroine is a female!
{Lucy resumes looking into the sky.}
Lucy: When I catch the ball, I'll be the heroine!
Lucy: You don't know anything, do you, Charlie Brown?
The author writes:
Lucy's baseball ineptitude reaches astonishing new heights, as she forgets about catching a fly ball in order to school an imaginary Charlie Brown on proper word choice.
The staging in the original, you may notice, involves some artistic license, with Charlie Brown running up from the far depths of the outfield. I don't like it any less for that.
