I left out the bit where Nomad kills Scotty, and naturally everyone gets a bit upset. Nomad then asks if Kirk would like it to repair Scotty, which it does. But Nomad says it can't restore Uhura's mind, thus leaving her to have to relearn the entirety of graduate level English, mathematics, science, and communications engineering, all in one week.

Spock: Jackson Roykirk of Earth built the Nomad space probe in 2002. Damaged, it melded with an alien probe designed to sterilise soil samples. It seeks its creator's home, to sterilise all imperfection.
Kirk: That can't be good.

Kirk: Wrong! Jackson Roykirk, your creator, is dead. You have mistaken me for him. You are in error!
