Oh man... this is like an episode of some Sid & Marty Krofft show on steroids. As psychedelic kid's Saturday morning entertainment went, H.R. Pufnstuf had nothing on this episode.
Things I did not have space to show:
- Life support systems on the Enterprise failing, and all the air running out instantly.
- Megas-Tu looking like a Peter Max painting before Lucien changes it to look more like a normal planet.
- The women on Megas-Tu all being young and beautiful, and lining up to buy love potions to ensnare a man.
- Spock drawing the pentagram.
- Spock moving chess pieces by magic.
- Sulu summoning from thin air a beautiful woman in a cabaret club cocktail waitress outfit and attempting to embrace her.
- Uhura casting a dismissive eye at Sulu doing the above and muttering, "Good luck."
- All the crew of the Enterprise in stocks, surrounded by Megans in American Pilgrim garb.
This episode's writer, Larry Brody, originally intended the Enterprise crew to meet God, and Gene Roddenberry liked the idea. However, NBC executives nixed the plan, saying you couldn't show God as a character on a kid's TV show. So they used the Devil instead. True story. Oh, and Asmodeus too, for good measure.
