Episode 2.18: The Immunity Syndrome

<<FIRST     <PREVIOUS     NEXT>     LATEST>>

I thought it was finally time to tackle one of the staple shots of Star Trek - the crew flailing about while being flung in random directions on the bridge whenever the ship gets hit by something. There are several particularly egregious examples in this episode.

I think this episode has the biggest death toll of any Star Trek episode. Several billion people die in it, albeit off-screen.

1
Captain's log, Stardate 4307.1. Approaching Starbase 6 for R and R.
Kirk: Spock, what is it?
Spock: I felt a great disturbance. As if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.
2
Uhura: Captain, Starbase 6 orders us to respond to distress call from Intrepid in solar system Gamma 7A.
Kirk: Intrepid is manned by Vulcans.
Spock: They're dead, Jim. They're all dead. Everybody's dead, Jim.
3
Chekov: Gamma 7A... The whole star system... is gone.
McCoy: Billions of people dead, Jim!
Spock: That's what I just said, Doctor.
4
Uhura: We've lost contact with Starfl— Aaargh!
McCoy: Aaargh!
Kirk: Aaargh!
5
{a strange zone is on the viewscreen}
McCoy: All crew are sick, nearly fainting.
Spock: The negative energy zone ahead of us destroyed Intrepid and Gamma 7A. We must flee.
Kirk: No! Drug the entire crew on stimulants!
McCoy: All right!
Kirk: We're going in! Allons-y!
6
Scotty: We cannae escape! Reverse thrust sends us deeper into the zone!
Kirk: It's negative energy. Forward thrust.
Scotty: That's slowin' us doon! Reverse polarity... astonishin' how often that works.
7
{a giant blob is on the viewscreen}
Spock: That blob... living protoplasm with a gelatinous layer and semi-fluid nucleus.
McCoy: A giant single-celled amoeba.
Spock: Infecting our galaxy, like... a virus.
McCoy: A giant SPACE PLAGUE!!
8
Kirk: Someone needs to sample the amoeba in a shuttlecraft.
Spock: McCoy is a doctor, trained in biology.
McCoy: Spock's science officer. Logically it should be him.
Kirk: It's a suicide mission.
McCoy, Spock: Me!
9
Spock: {on shuttlecraft} Spock here. I am entering the body of the amoeba. Like... some kind of fantastic voyage. It is preparing to reproduce. We must act as antibodies, destroying the virus.
McCoy: {on Enterprise} Hey! Who's the PLAGUE doctor here?!
10
McCoy: If that thing multiplies it will wipe out the entire galaxy!
Kirk: Antibodies... Anti... We'll destroy it with an antimatter bomb!
Scotty: What a novel idea. Delay timer, cap'n?
Kirk: Barely enough time for us to get clear, Scotty!
11
SFX: Kaboom!
{crew flung around the bridge because there are no safety harnesses}
12
McCoy: Boo-yah! Giant space PLAGUE destroyed!
Chekov: Shuttlecraft drifting nearby.
McCoy: Spock! Not destroyed!
Spock: {from shuttlecraft} Indeed.
McCoy: Eh, you win some, you lose some.
