Poll 14

20 March 2007 - 23 March 2007

Instructions to voters were:

This is a poll to decide some of the basic science of the setting. At the moment, it hasn't been determined whether artificial gravity exists in the setting or not. Now it's time for the Infinite Monkeys (i.e. you) to decide.

The two options are:

Yes - artificial gravity exists. This is a science fiction concept, using some speculative form of science that we currently do not have in the real world. By using some sort of technology, it is possible to generate an attractive force that will pull on matter. It is possible to build this equipment into spaceships. When active, it attracts mass in a way similar to a normal gravitational field. Thus it is possible to build a spaceship in which you can walk around normally on floors while in space. It may be possible to mount the gravity generators in multiple orientations, so that gravity changes as you move through the ship - one person could stand on what looks like a ceiling or wall to someone else. This technology might also be able to be used to generate effects like contragravity and tractor beams - but not necessarily; we can decide that later.

No - artificial gravity does not exist. It might be theoretically possible, or completely impossible, but for now, it's certainly not available. Spaceship crews must deal with Newtonian physics and weightlessness while in space. It is possible to generate a pseudo-gravitational effect by spinning a ship, or by constant acceleration. These techniques may or may not be in standard use; we can decide that later. Otherwise, space crews either just float around, or use restraints or magnetic/velcro shoes when they need to be anchored to a "floor".

Outcome

Option 1 corresponds to "yes", option 2 to "no". The result is that artificial gravity does exist in the setting.

This does not necessarily mean it is common, or that our heroes have it on their ship. It just means the technology exists.
