I saw this strip, thought Garfield's "support" of Jon was a bit strange (throwing sand on to someone he perceived as having performed an injustice towards Jon), and thought about how Garfield just decided to throw sand on someone for no good reason, so I removed the first panel to emphasize this absurd event.
