The author writes:

I wanted to tie this in to a specific Lovecraft story. I remembered one in which a scholar began having nightmares and hearing chanting in his dreams and sometimes in his waking hours, pushing him towards madness. I read my way through the plot synopses of the stories listed in Wikipedia, but couldn't find one that sounded exactly like what I remembered. So then I started skimming the actual stories, but still couldn't find one that matched my recollections. At that point, I just gave up and drew the strip.

My theories: I was remembering one of the non-HPL Cthulhu Mythos stories; my recollections were incorrect (like that'd ever happen) and I just didn't recognise the story when I saw it; or it was actually me who experienced the chanting, and I am now in fact insane. If you are still reading this far, -2 SAN for you.
