{A snail, shell emblazoned with the logo of "Trail Creeping Tours", is standing at the start of a forest trail, addressing a group of other snails.}

Tour Guide Snail: Remember: to protect our natural environment, take only memories, and leave only slime trails.

The author writes:

I was going to call the tour company Trail Creeps, modelled on "trail walks" or "trail hikes" or something, but I thought that name might give the wrong impression. I was also going to refer in the script to the guide snail as "he", until I realised that wasn't correct either.

What would a society of sentient hermaphrodites be like? Could gender dysphoria and a wide human-like sexuality spectrum exist? I guess we'll never know. Unless we encounter a species of sentient hermaphrodites. Then we can just ask them.

It just occurred to me that snails are on trails wherever they are creeping. They're a Class of trailblazers. From now on, I'm going to view them with fresh eyes. On stalks.
