The author writes:

When I was young, I watched an episode of Garfield and Friends where Garfield had a dream he ate so much that he got bigger and he ate a tree. When I ate broccoli, I ate it the same way Garfield ate that tree. In hindsight, I think it was a nice subtle way to get kids to eat broccoli.

Ironically, the same character seems to not like broccoli in a comic strip.

I edited the tree to make it look more like broccoli.
